Nail polish. A product whose collections work me up into a frenzy until I get them home and realize I have 90 of the same shades already. Happens. Every. Season. BUT, there are a few tried-and-true colors that get repeat love from me every year. And below, some of my favorites, new and old, for Spring & Summer.

Essie Turquoise & Caicos, Milani Cool Vibe, China Glaze Pink Voltage, OPI Do You Lilac It, Sephora for OPI Only Gold for Me, Butter London Macbeth

1. Essie-Turquoise & Caicos :: A truly AWESOME turquoise. Cannot totally explain why, out of my huge stash of turquoise, this shade is different, but it’s my favorite. The color is deep and true, not watered down. Just lovely.

2. Milani-Cool Vibe :: I’m a huge fan of purple polish and Cool Vibe is a nice purple-y berry. Totally cut for fingers or toes.

3. China Glaze-Pink Voltage :: A neon pink with a blue duochrome. It looks great on the toes. The blue sheen is barely noticeable but gives the polish exact “shine.” I find anytime a polish has a blue sheen, it always looks prettier & glossier. Try it. You’ll see.

4. OPI-Do You Lilac It? :: While there is an inundation of pastels in the Spring, Do You Lilac It? is all I need. Such a perfect pastel purple.

5. Sephora by OPI-Only Gold for Me :: So I’m cheating a little bit since this is a topcoat, but it’s great to add a little exact pizzazz to any color. The chunks of glitter are a nice size and really make a statement on the nails but aren’t so chunky as to add a weird texture. Looks fabulous over pink too.

6. Butter London-Macbeth :: A recent fave, this is the perfect mix of coral and red. At first, it looked just like Essie’s Peach Daiquiri to me, but Macbeth has that little extra hint of red that makes it that much sexier. I’ve worn this repeatedly on my toes for weeks and it always makes my toes look hot–not an easy “feet”. (Ha. Get it? “Feet”. Ok. That was bad…)

So that’s it. My top Spring/Summer polishes. Give ’em a go and maybe you’ll fall in love too.

DIY Wire Photo or Card HoldersWhen I go on trips, instead of bringing back traditional souvenirs, I like to find things I find interesting and incorporate them into my life in unique ways. On a recent trip to Portland, I found some cool keys that I made into a long chain necklace. On our last cruise, I found sea shells that I made into earrings. And on our honeymoon, we found some interesting rocks. (Huh. Yeah. Let’s no psychoanalyze why out of everything, I brought home rocks from my honeymoon.)

Since November, these rocks have just sat in our office. But recently I decided to make them useful in our home by making them into unique photo holders for our wedding and honeymoon pictures. The technique is simple and can be used in many different ways–these don’t just need to hold photos. A few different ideas are place cards, table numbers, business cards, price cards, food labels, birthday/holiday cards, and anything else you can think of. And you’re not limited to using something like a rock either. Anything weighted will work. Even things that are not weighted will work, if you counterbalance the top with the bottom. In short, this has many uses. Enjoy!

Sorry I’ve been MIA. Life has been incredibly busy this week, causing me to be unable to post my last two looks for One Show, Five Days. But it’s coming. In the mean time, take a look at two sewing patterns I’m planning to try soon. Going to shop for fabric tomorrow. Yippee!

Simplicity 2004 New Look 6013For New Look 6013 I’m really loving a nice, crisp mint or a Missoni-inspired print. And for Simplicity 2004, I think a floral would be really cute. I’m loving the green & pink rose pattern. So lovely. And the aubergine solid swatch is actually inspired by this Polyvore set below.

I have to admit that today’s ensemble was a challenge. I had an outfit in mind but when I put it on it was awful. Just… awful! I hate when that happens. So, having no back-up, I feverishly went through my closet and found something that “worked”. But after 5 minutes of wearing it, it didn’t feel right. And I had to change. So I just started to play and voila! Today’s outfit. It’s funny how a challenge like this really forces you to asses what you have and use it in new ways. Gotta love it. So, two things learned today…

1. If you hate what you’re wearing at home, or are just “eh” about it, change it. Because by the end of the day, you will hate it. And it’s funny how liking what you’re wearing can change your mood.

2. If all else fails (as my per-meditated outfits often do) give up and go naked. J/k. Stop trying to figure something out in your head and just play around with stuff. The only real downside of this is the mess it will create if you’re like me and hate putting clothes away. I hate a mess, but I also hate fiddling with hangers. *Sigh*

Let me start by saying that I have officially become obsessed with Anorak jackets and this outfit was the first time I’ve gotten to wear one. It feels very “reporter” or “magazine editor” to me for some reason. Anyone else?

But while I loved the jacket, in hindsight the skirt might have been too short for the office. It’s one of those that doesn’t look too short but once you start walking, it hikes up. Only hose with this skirt from now on, for work anyway. Lesson learned. And with this crazy weather, I was barely able to get by with a jacket today. My jacket days are numbered, apparently :/

Oh, yeah, and I totally got photo bombed by our Schnauzer puppy, Sophie. No respect! I knew it was only a matter of time before she made it to a photo. Just walks right in… la da da . Oh? Are you taking a photo. Well, don’t mind me. I’ll just be down here, sniffing the ground… haaaaaangin’ out.

Oh, and please excuse my WHITE legs. The winter has not been kind. Also, I’m getting laser hair removal there and the techs are Nazis about no tanning for the laser to work properly. Which means a fun summer of pastey-ness for me (heh, and for all you who read my blog!).

I love shoes. As far back as I can remember, I’ve always had a rather large shoe collection. And recently is has grown… a lot. I guess it’s because shoes always fit. The problem is that I buy what I think are gorgeous, wonderfully beautiful shoes and then they sit as I fall back into my old shoe rut with the same shoes in rotation. So, to put this to an end and stretch my creativity (one of the purposes of this blog!), I’ve given myself a challenge. One pair of shoes. Fives days. Five different outfits. Ambitious? Yes. But it’s sure to be an interesting project. Sooooo… let’s get started! First up? My beloved Nathan by L.A.M.B.

Ahhh, Nathan. I love these shoes. I’ve loved them for quite some time and when I saw a pair for $130 (usually $355) on Ebay, I snatched them up. They were barely worn–I think they were a display model. So cute, they sat in the corner of my room, getting use here and there. But not this week!

From This to That Easy DIY Studded Booties

These booties were originally seen in this previous outfit post. This is a great & fun way to make something you already have new again or to revamp an item you’ve thrifted that needs some extra pizzazz (as I did here).

I think it’s fairly clear to see what I did so instead of giving you a full tutorial, I will give you some tips I learned along the way, as well as my supply list.

{Supplies Used}

Item to Stud :: My booties above are thrifted
10mm Pyramid Studs :: Purchased on Ebay for cheap!
Needle Nose Pliers
X-acto Knife (Optional)

Tips for Studding Your Stuff

  1.  Be ware of the thickness of your item. The teeth on the pyramid studs can only pierce so deep, so make sure your selected item to revamp isn’t too thick. I would say nothing over 5-8mm in thickness for this type of stud.
  2. Make sure the prongs on the stud are straight before you push them into your material otherwise you’ll have trouble getting them to pierce and bend in.
  3. Try to be precise when choosing placement, as crooked studs will effect the placement of later ones, especially if you’re stacking them like I did here. Luckily though, the look here is very forgiving. I had a few screw ups but you can’t really tell once they’re on.
  4. When pushing the stud in, us your pliers to help the prongs get through as much as possible by pressing around where the prong should pierce. If you’re still having trouble, remove the stud and use the X-acto knife to make a deeper incision.
  5. Bend prongs inward towards the center of the stud. Use your pliers for this. Your fingers will thank you.
  6. Run a finger over the set prongs to make sure everything is set flat and nothing will snag.
  7. Done!

P.S. If you screw up on any stud, simply pry up the prongs and reset it. I was able to take off and reset the same stud, so no waste!

That’s it! A very simple but edgy upgrade. What’s also great is that these come in many different shapes, colors, and sizes. And in case you’d like to see, this is what the back of the studs look like.

Party Like a Rock Star

March 29, 2012

Today felt like a dark-sunglasses-leather-and-studs kind of day. I DIY’ed my boots. See my DIY for details. I’ve been feeling kind of under the weather so I’m keeping this one short but picture heavy.

{What I’m Wearing}

Sunglasses :: Faux Wayfarers ($10 for 2)- Ebay from this seller. Shipping was fast and the quality is good on these.

Lipstick :: Revlon Lip Butter in “Raspberry”

Necklace :: Cross, self-made

Blazer :: Target (On clearance back in the day)

T-shirt :: Express ($10)

Jeans :: Express ($70)

Bag :: Mimi’s Boutique ($60- SOLD OUT) Try this one from AliExpress or the real Rocco Duffel from Alexander Wang.

Boots :: Goodwill ($4)- DIY’ed these suckers with some Ebay studs! They look sooo much better now.

And a note about buying second hand shoes… Usually I stay away from shoes at thrift shops and Goodwill because the idea of a stranger’s feet being in them kinda grosses me out. But these must’ve been meant for me because they were my size, brand new, and only $4! $4! I couldn’t believe it. So, anyways, wanted to mention that.
